Adopting underutilized legumes in tackling food security is essential, especially this era of climate change. Underutilized are embedded with inherent potentials such as the ability to survive extreme conditions (such temperature, drought, pH, saline, etc.), high nitrogen-fixing potential, weed and disease control ability, nutrient status. can improve yield companion crops an intercropping system a subsequent crop (due their residual effects). They possess symbiotic non-symbiotic organisms nodules, also have different bulk soil, rhizoplanes rhizosphere, which fix nitrogen, solubilize phosphorus or produce exudates help improving plant growth. Also, they contain some phytochemicals, including alkaloids, saponin, amino acids, organic inorganic minerals, compounds that human health prevent diseases. Hence, review discusses current status, role, challenges prospects security.
